Atayal Society
The Atayal people are a social group that adheres to ancestral precepts (gaga), developed based on blood ties, shared covenants, communal sacrifices, and shared labor, deeply ingrained in their lives. In the Atayal belief system, ancestral spirits are paramount; the ancestral spirit Utux is considered the ruler of the universe, possessing supreme power. The Atayal language, passed down from their ancestors, describes how the world was woven (created) by Utux.
In Atayal, the words for "life" and "weaving" share the same root :
Life is tninum, weaving is tminum
The wisdom of the Atayal people in agriculture and hunting lies in their respect for nature .
The qulliq balay (called "true fish" in the Atayal language) is a vital symbol of the Atayal people's ecological life. The Atayal ancestors had a tradition of breeding fish, protecting the fry and maintaining the stream ecosystem, allowing the qulliq balay population to thrive for generations. The Atayal hunting customs follow the seasons and adhere to the taboos of the ancestral spirits, the "Utux," avoiding fishing only when the seasons are right and not draining the ponds. The delicate and fragrant taste of the qulliq balay is a shared memory of deliciousness within the Atayal family tradition, and because of its preciousness, it is considered the "highest honor food" offered to relatives and distinguished guests.
