Introduction to Xikou Tribe
There are two theories about the origin of the name: one is that the Dahan River widens as it flows through this area, forming a river terrace, hence the name Xikoutai (River Mouth Terrace); the other is that the Silang River flows into the Dahan River from the opposite bank here, hence the name. The Atayal people also call it Rahaw.
It is said that the ancestors came from Lahao in Wulai District, New Taipei City, hence the name Lahao. However, Lahao later specifically referred to Qiaoban Plateau (Luofu Settlement) in Luofu Village, so the local name was changed to Xikou.
The residents of Xikou were the Atayal people who migrated here from the high slopes of Luofu Village about 200 years ago. During the Japanese occupation, a garrison was established at Shangxikoutai. Like Shangxikou, Xiaxikou was also inhabited by the Xikou community, but during the Japanese occupation, the community members moved to Luofu Village, and the area gradually fell into disuse. In 1927 (Showa 2), under the auspices of the Japanese police, the Zhiji community, led by its leader Apaw-syat, moved about 30 households and 121 people from Xiayun Village to this location.
